Today EYFS children have listened to the story of Noah’s Ark, we then retold the story together. The children were able to build their own Arks using the construction materials in the classroom.
This morning all the infants and junior children had the whole school assembly together on the junior site.
Mr Morton held Easter Service for the children and the staff. He discussed the true meaning of Easter – reminding them of God’s love for us that lasts forever, that we can know it everyday and that when we trust God, He changes us inside and gives us joy and hope because of what Jesus has done for us.
Following Mr Morton’s beautiful Easter Service, Mrs Smyth and Mrs Drury presented the Ethic of Excellence awards to the children who excelled in each subject – English, Maths, Design Technology, Science, Geography, History, Music, PE, Religious Education, Art, Computing and PSHE. Super well done!
Then it was time to say goodbye to a very special member of staff – Mrs Short, who was with us for ten years. Following Mr Hardy’s funny but very warm introduction, Mrs Short shared a few words with the children and the staff. We will truly miss Mrs Short and wish her all the best.
Miss Short also joined the assembly so we presented her with a box full of gifts from the staff for her baby. It was lovely to see her and meet her new baby!
Then, Mrs Smyth said that a member of staff was having a baby soon. ‘Who would that be?’ Many children said ‘Miss Greaves!’. Miss Greaves was presented with a bouquet of flowers and a baby box. She is starting her maternity leave next week, and we wish her and her family very best wishes.
And last, but not least, it was time to celebrate someone’s big birthday … Mr D’s! The children and the staff all sang Happy Birthday for Mr D.
What an amazing wrap of another busy term! Have a wonderful and safe half term everyone, and we look forward to seeing you all back on Wednesday 20 April.
EYFS children continued to enjoy the great weather outside, and look what they found!
Reception children have planted our own sunflower 🌻 seeds today. They could tell Mrs Smyth that their seeds needed soil, sunlight and water to help them to grow.
EYFS have loved playing in the sunshine!
Continuing with our Being Safe theme in PSHE, Mr Walledge of Paragon Training and Consultancy was back to demonstrate more First Aid to the children. After a quick recap of CPR and the recovery position, the children were taught how to deal with a choking casualty and the best way to deal with a broken bone by keeping it as still as possible. I am sure you can tell from the smiles in the pictures, another fun afternoon of learning took place.
Children were so excited to have used their vouchers to get their World Book Day books!
Children’s Mental Health Week took place on 7 – 13 February 2022. The theme for the week was ‘Growing Together‘.
This theme was used to show the children just how much they have grown over the year, not just physically but mentally and academically too.
To show who has helped them grow, the children designed flowers and hot air balloons with the names of people who have supported them over the last year included on them.
Mrs Wood kindly created a display using their creations.
After successfully being accepted on to the European Space Agency (ESA) Astronaut Training Program following our letters of application and then designing a Space suit for the mission, our focus in science on Tuesday was to design and fly a rocket.
Despite the windy weather, we still managed to launch our rockets and record how far they flew. Afterwards, we discussed how to adjust them to achieve a more successful flight.
Last Friday our Reception children talked about the foods that ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar 🐛’ ate in our focused story this week. We then sorted the foods that he ate into healthy and unhealthy food. For our main activity we made our own healthy fruit salad, the children used the knives carefully to cut the fruits into small pieces.
KS2 children have had a wonderful day on World Book Day! It was brilliant to see Y3/4 tasting all manners of chocolate treats, Y5 making medicines and Y6 creating a zoo of incredible dirty beasts!
We have had a wonderful day in school celebrating World Book Day. As a school we all completed activities related to books by the author Roald Dahl, we looked at the book ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’.
We made our own chocolate treats! Willy Wonka also came and hid his special golden tickets in our playground for us all to find!
Today in our World Book Day Assembly we had some lovely quotes from the children:
“Books are so amazing, you can make up your own stories and you can pretend you are in that book.”
“Books help your imagination”
“Books have beautiful pictures”
“Books give you information.”
We all had such a lovely day.
In PSHE this term, the children are learning how to stay safe offline. Last week, they learnt about accident and emergencies. This week, the focus was on how to deal with an emergency. With the help of Mr Walledge, a qualified First Aid trainer, the children were able to learn the basics of CPR. They were then able to practice their skills on adults, children and babies before learning how to put someone into the recovery position.

Mrs Battersby’s class celebrated achieving 500 Class Dojo points!
Year 6 children have been reading Wonder by R J Palacio which describes the story of August, a boy with facial disfigurements, going to school for the very first time. His parents are understandably nervous about this. The children were asked to write a character description about the person who August meets on his very first day. I think you will agree that Holly and Charis have captured this moment beautifully. – Mrs Walledge
Louisa
I was petrified. I just knew I wouldn’t be given a welcoming look. I was 5 inches away from the gate and stares had already flooded around me. Before I could scream and run away, my mum gave me the biggest hug in the world. It clearly meant a lot to her. I wanted to say something but I just couldn’t find the words. She stood up and to my surprise, she told I have a choice to go or not. But I couldn’t just give up now. I am already this far. I swallowed and only managed to spill out the words, “I’m ready for school.” She smiled and tears filled her eyes. Dad and my sister gave me a hug and I knew I was finally ready. They all got in the car and waved goodbye. After I had waved back I took my first step onto the school grounds.
I entered the building. I imagined the hallway was empty and deserted. No one seemed to pay attention to me. Thankfully enough a girl, known as Louisa, pulled me away from the silence. She greeted me and I could feel the unsettling wave of nervousness come rushing back. I couldn’t stop stuttering no matter how much I tried. She had pretty, golden brown hair, her cheeks were flustered rosy pink. Her eyes were crystal blue and her shoes were baby blue Adidas trainers.
She shook my hand conscientiously, her hair swung and hit her in the back of the neck. I could feel my shirt creasing and shrinking as my heart was already bursting out of my top. It felt as if I was losing consciousness. He dark, brown hair turned purple, her peachy skin turned white – as pale as a ghost. I watched as her lavender cardigan shrunk. I snapped back into the moment. Suddenly the bell rang, it was the call to my attention telling me to leave. “Sorry Louisa, I’ve got to go.” I walked away trying to hurry. Her shoes were screaming click clack click clack.

Lucy
I’ve been waiting for this day since what seems like forever. We jumped in the car and headed towards Beecher Prep. As I walked towards the school, I was dazzled by this girl with wavy, chestnut hair. Her name was Lucy. She strolled up to me, seeing me staring at her, and asked if we could walk together. I was confused, no one ever wants to walk with me! This could be my new friend.
I followed her down the corridor to an immense, jet black door that boomed down on me. As we were walking, her hair flew out gracefully as if she was a princess.
“Hey, you look….” I paused mid-sentence thinking about what I was about to babble out.
“What?” her gentle face turned as unyielding as stone.
“Nothing.” I muttered, looking on.
We entered the room, it beat all my expectations (you had a desk all to yourself!), there was silence like someone had hit the mute button. Everyone in our homeroom was looking at Lucy’s dress. Lucy wore thick heeled sandals that blinded others with her brightness gleaming on them. Her dress consisted of a green base colour with small daises planted around it. A small shoulder bag danced around her side. It had a Harry Potter logo embroidered into it.
“Hello loser,” proclaimed a boy behind her.
Her class joined in making spiteful comments about her. I tried to defend her but those comments turned on me.
“Leave him!” Lucy bellowed. She was tiny but had a huge voice. Her eyes looked like a dart focussing on each individual. Her mouth poised to shoot venom to kill them. Steam was chugging out of her ears. The teacher (whose name I didn’t quite catch) came in, she was her usual self….
As the bell rang for lunch, we found a table to sit on. Now her face showed a scene as if butter wouldn’t melt. Her long eyelashes batted furiously at the people in our homeroom. Her skin was as ivory as snow. I was surprised. I had various areas with sunburn from the summer. Lucy’s face dazzled in the light as if the Crown Jewels had been polished after 100 years. Sometimes, she had the jaws of a jaguar or an immaculate smile. Lucy didn’t give me the fake smile treatment like the others. Her smile lit up the whole world with warmth. Lucy was just as normal as me.
I knew she was someone to trust, someone who would be my friend no matter what. She strolled through the school like an occupied personal assistant scampering after their master. Unfortunately, she was giving me a lecture. “Don’t let anyone get to you,” she paused out of breath remembering the homeroom incident. “Also, pay attention in Science or you’ll never hear the end of it from Mr King – he teaches Science.” You could almost feel a presence in those dreary halls. Beecher Prep has a high record of awards. Glistening. Not a speck of dust. This felt like the place to be. Lucy showed her luminous smile showing a pleasant day in one movement. I could tell she was going to be my friend throughout middle school.

After sharing our book, The Proudest Blue, some Years 1 & 2 children showed an interest in Hijab. Using her own experiences form home Reman wanted to help her friends and found some material in the classroom to help them wear Hijab.
This week in Nursery and Reception the children have been enjoying learning about penguins. We have used non-fiction books to find out interesting facts about them and had a great time watching the live Penguin webcam from Edinburgh Zoo. The children commented on what they saw and we kept on checking what the penguins were getting up to throughout the day. As the weather has been suitable for penguins this week we also held ice cubes to explore them further and completed an investigation to see how long it would take for the ice cubes to melt in our classroom, then discussed what happened and why.
The School Council visited Hope Community Café to sing Christmas songs, and they sang beautifully.
They also enjoyed a marvellous hot chocolate with marshmallows! It was yummy!
So much fun was had at the Y6 Christmas party. Two tense games of Christmas bingo were played followed by Christmas treats. Then it was off to the hall for musical chairs and musical statues where there were some very interesting dance moves. The afternoon was finished off with the distribution of presents and cards.
Year 3 and 4 celebrated at their Christmas party with a very special surprise visitor.
The children were delighted to meet Santa and share their Christmas wish lists.
Happy Christmas from all the children in Year 3 and 4.
Y3/4 chldren had great fun making their fruit rockets that they had designed as part of DT lesson. Their topic has focused on Guy Fawkes and have been working on researching and designing their own rocket. The children have also worked on the bridge hold to cut.
Here they are today making their rockets that they then thoroughly enjoyed eating afterwards!
How do you learn about what animals eat? You investigate poo of course.
Looking at the ‘samples’ we decided whether the poo came from a herbivore, Carnivore or an omnivore, depending on what it contained, and then thought about which kind of animal it might have been!! Some great investigations and discussions were had.
Disclaimer- it was not real poo!
The Reception and Nursery children enjoyed decorating biscuits with yellow icing, jelly sweets and rainbow sprinkles to create a spotty biscuit.
They descrived them as Yummy!
Children in Year 6 have started our DT project this week. They will be working towards sewing an animal to feature in an animation. This week’s lesson focussed on the skill of running stitch. They were very proud of their first attempts (for many) of sewing.
Year 6 children have been learning about equality and the difference between equality and fairness. They now understand that equality means giving people the opportunities they need to be as successful as others.
Mrs Walledge brought her service dress and medals in to show the children. She explained why she received them and even let them try on her jacket. The children made poppies to add to their Remembrance display.
Class 1/2G had a surprise visitor on Monday, after the classroom had been decorated to launch their new class text Lost and Found by Oliver Jeffers.
A penguin showed up and hid himself in a box! He is now making himself at home in the classroom and causing mischief!
Year 4 have enjoyed reading the book ‘The Firework-maker’s Daughter’ by Philip Pullman. They made predictions about what might happen in the book based upon the front cover and blurb. The children learnt new vocabulary and answered retrieval and inference questions on chapter 1. In addition, they studied the main character (Lila) and discussed adjectives to describe what she was like.
In an act of Remembrance, the year 3 and 4 children have made poppies. The children stood in silence for two minutes and after our service of Remembrance, a representative from each class visited our Remembrance display with their poppies.
Class 1/2S have had a mysterious visitor and they left tracks on the classroom floor. The children predicted who they thought it might be and found out it was a penguin!
The penguin brought with him a book called ‘Lost and Found’ which we are looking forward to reading next week. The class have also been working hard to consolidate all their learning in the classroom during provision time, focussing on all the learning they have completed throughout the week.
Year 1 and 2 have been truly inspired by the art work in The Tin Forest and Henri Rousseau’s Tiger in a Tropical Storm and have created their own pieces.
The children practiced and applied their art skills to add tone, collage and texture in different layers of their work.
Year 6 have been experimenting with watercolours to blend and mix.
Vanesa used watercolours to match the colours around the edge of an image to show how they can merge together.
Ella and Amy showed the story of The Tin Forest in one image, starting with the dull and gloomy scrapyard which eventually evolved into a beautiful and colourful forest.
Year 3 are creating a large piece of artwork based on the novel ‘The Tin Forest’. The children will be using a variety of techniques, including weaving. to create their artwork.
Year 6 have been moving their own dance performances to ‘Vivaldi’s Four Seasons’. The children are really proud of their achievements.
It’s been a very busy week at the academy.
Year 4 have been sketching objects in their classroom, focusing on the use of the shades light and dark. Class teacher, Miss Thackray, is incredibly proud of the work produced by the class.
Charis in year 5 was awarded the first pen licence. Her teacher says, ‘Her presentation skills are of a truly exceptional standard.’ Well done Charis!
We are incredibly proud of Ted and the kindness that he shows. He has shaved his lovely hair to raise money for a diabetes charity.

Year 3 and 4 had a fantastic World Book Day. They all enjoyed listening to the story “The Tea Party in the Woods” and using their inference skills to think about what the little girl might be saying and thinking in different parts of the story. The children also enjoyed creating their own tea party menu for one and used their times table knowledge to find out how much of each food item they would need. In the afternoon, the children decorated face masks for animals in the story then came together as a bubble to have a parade, just like Kikko in the story.
We all thoroughly enjoyed our Christmas lunch this year! 🎄
